Train Raiders

Train Raider is a board game designed and produced in Japan. It has some parallels to the Empire Builder systems in that you build networks by drawing on the board, but the similarities don't extend too far beyond that. The winner is the player who receives the most "honor points", and you can gain honor points in three different ways:

1. Building your network to connect to more towns, cities, and big cities
2. Destroying other people's trains during missions
3. Successfully completing missions

Train Raider is fun to play and the "battles" are not serious. The game is beautifully produced and as far as I know is available only in Japan.

Twisted Adventures Little Red Riding Hood

Ever thought that regular fairy tales aren't scary enough? We've all heard about the big bad wolf tricking a little girl and then swallowing her grandma, so that's old news. Which is why Cerebral Games went for a more Tim Burton-esque version, where the forest is full of thorns, huge spiders lurk in the dark and fluffy bunnies are locked in cages. Their Twisted Adventures: Little Red Riding Hood is a two parts spooky, one part sweet one-button puzzle platformer in which our young protagonist jumps around spinning globes in hopes of reaching her grandmother's house. To make Lil' Red Hoodie jump around, simply click when the arrow is pointing in the desired direction. The goal is to reach the farthest globe to the right, while collecting flowers, apples and bunnies. There are three apples to find and one fluffball to free in every level, and twelve levels in each of the three worlds (or five in the mobile version). To unlock the second and third world, you'll need a certain number of apples and rabbits.

Twisted Adventures: Little Red Riding Hood The jump mechanics are good enough, though they can be surprising at times: the jumps sometimes feel a bit too short, and it's easy enough to misdirect the little girl, sending her straight into the abyss. Luckily, the first world doesn't introduce too many obstacles early on, so there is time to get the feel for the physics. The difficulty doesn't follow a curve, and it can almost seem like the levels are in a random order, but this doesn't take away from the game's appeal. Rather, the difficulty is often up to you and whether you're really determined to collect every single flower. But even if you happen to find the game too hard, you'll want to keep playing, because it's so utterly enchanting. The delicate, yet eerie visual design goes hand in hand with the music-box soundtrack and makes for a perfect environment for this type of gameplay. And this is only the first installment of what will hopefully be a full series, so we can expect to continue our critter-liberating journey through the woods. Freedom for the bunnies!

Princess Snow White Dress Up

I'm so happy with this Snow White dress up game and I hope you feel the same way! As much as I love the traditional, fairy tale version of Snow White, the Disney version if you will, I definitely wanted something different. I wanted to be able to use this game, this character creator, to make a Snow White that is more like the Snow White from the TV show "Once Upon a Time" and the movie "Snow White and the Huntsman". Because to me, that's a more realistic Snow White and well, more cool! She's a princess but she's also an outlaw and a warrior and for all that needs something a bit more than just a princess gown! I hope you enjoy this game as much as I do! :)

The Great BazookiDon't let the first few stages fool you. Though The Great Bazooki initially seems almost too Bloons-y, before long the game begins introducing a multitude of new magical elements to keep things fresh. How about magic teleporting hats, complete with pesky rabbits? Locked chests with floating keys? Fans, rings of fire, guillotines, and more? Whisk all that up with a gorgeously charming cartoon style and a silly sense of humour, and you have a simple yet fun game that brings a fresh new look and feel to a familiar concept. It's a shame the game loses the storytelling aspect for the most part after the beginning since it would have been the cherry on top. As it is, though it doesn't really shake up the formula it draws from enough to be groundbreaking, it is a fun challenge, and one with a lovely style to boot.

Easier said than done when this cemetery was apparently built by Rube Goldberg, with switches, planks, ramps, bouncing boards, and much, much more. Your score is determined by how quickly you solve the stage, but don't worry... the number's strictly for bragging rights. Bury My Bones is in concept a relatively simple game, but the sheer amount of elements used to get your bony buddy around the stage help keep things fresh. There are fans, punching gloves, plows, and more, and each level is constructed in a unique way.

The problem is, it can occasionally feel like the physics are fickle beasts indeed, and other annoyances, like the way vehicles don't stop immediately when you click them, mar what is otherwise a pleasantly creative and goofy experience. The amount of pixel-perfect precision it feels like you need to have in some cases borders on the unreasonable, and it's disappointing since the game is otherwise really clever and entertaining. Bury My Bones has a lot going for it and is well worth a play if you're a patient fan of the genre, with its charm, creativity, and ghoulish sense of fun... just don't expect it to be very forgiving.

Bedard has created a match-3 hybrid that has a good balance of playing the match grid and paying attention to the action portion of the screen. It's not enough to just charge up the elements and cast spells willy-nilly; you have to pay attention to the field so you know where your elementals are needed. On the down side, the game needs a higher difficulty curve to be more of a challenge. If you're a match-3 expert and able to upgrade your spells quickly, the levels can become decreasingly frantic as your elementals are able to make easy work of the enemies. Despite this, Tales of Terratos is a game with quirky, cute graphics (courtesy of Etienne Jean) that will occupy your brain, eyes and hands with fun back-and-forth action.
